Wilfred John Brown was born in Burwell in 1884 (Newmarket Q3-1884 3B:538), privately baptised 1st November 1884 in Burwell, son of George and Rachel BROWN (née JENNINGS).

1891 census...Aged 6, he was at Hythe Brigg Lane, (Hythe Bridge Lane) Burwell with his father George BROWN [47] farm labourer; his mother Rachel [42]; brother William [14] farm labourer and grandmother Mary JENNINGS [81]. All were born in Burwell

1901 census...Aged 16, a farm labourer, he was at Heys Lane, Burwell with his widowed mother, cousin Percival [9] born Camberwell, London and cousin James W JENNINGS [24] labourer born Burwell. His father had died in 1892.

1911 census...Aged 25, a farm labourer, he was at Hythe Lane, Burwell with his widowed mother, cousin Percival farm labourer and cousin, James JENNINGS [33] farm labourer, born Burwell.


He enlisted in Bury St. Edmunds.
The 7th Royal Fusiliers were part of the 63rd Royal Naval Division. The Naval Divisions were instituted as a way of using marines and naval Reservists who had no ship or could be better employed in the trenches. On 13th November 1916 they were involved in the capture of Beaucourt sur Ancre at the cost of 116 killed
